What's in Your Jewelry Box? (Assess Before You Clean)

Before grabbing a polishing cloth or preparing a warm bath, take a quick inventory of your piece's specific components:

• Solid Gold & Argentium Silver: Highly durable metals that handle gentle warm water and mild soap cleans exceptionally well.

• Sterling Silver: Benefits from gentle soap washing to remove skin oils, followed by a dedicated silver polishing cloth to lift tarnish caused by humidity and sweat.

• Gemstone Pieces:

  • Hard Transparent Gems (Diamonds, Sapphires, Quartz, Spinels, Tourmalines): Safe for warm soapy soaks and soft-bristle brushing to clear residue behind the setting.

  • Soft or Porous Gems (Opals, Pearls, Turquoise): Extremely sensitive to moisture and chemicals. These should never be submerged or soaked—wipe them gently with a soft, damp cloth only.

• Plated or Gold-Filled Metals: Require a light touch. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or chemical dips, which can wear down the surface layer over time.

The Summer Hazards to Avoid

• Chlorine (Pools & Hot Tubs): Harsh chemicals actively weaken alloyed metals, cause structural pitting, and degrade solder joints over time. Always remove jewelry before taking a dip.

• Saltwater & Sand: Salt leaves a dulling film on metal and stones, while fine sand acts as an abrasive that can scratch polished surfaces or wedge beneath stone settings.

• Sunscreens & Lotions: Heavy oils and mineral filters build up underneath settings and on the facets of gemstones, blocking light and leaving brilliant stones looking cloudy.

The Gentle At-Home Restorative Clean

(For solid metals and hard gemstone settings)

1. Soak: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap, like Dawn into a bowl of lukewarm water. Let your pieces sit for 5 to 10 minutes to break down accumulated sunscreen and skin oils.

2. Brush Gently: Use an ultra-soft baby toothbrush to carefully clear buildup from the back of settings, under wirework, and around prongs.

3. Rinse & Dry: Rinse under clean lukewarm water (be sure the sink drain is plugged!). Gently pat completely dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, which can cause micro-scratches on polished metal.

A Golden Rule for Outdoor Days

Follow the "Last On, First Off" habit: apply your sunscreens, bug sprays, and body lotions first, allowing them to absorb completely before putting on your jewelry. Once you return indoors, remove your pieces before washing up or heading into the shower.
