A little smoke. A little sparkle. Something spirited in your glass, something brilliant on your hand.
The holidays come with plenty of instructions: what to make, where to be, what to bring. Here’s a different kind of invitation. Put on a ring you love. Bring out the good glasses. Make something just because it tastes wonderful.

This season, I’m sharing Winter Smoke & Ginger, a cocktail that brings smoky mezcal together with floral elderflower, bright lime, and a little ginger warmth. Think low lights, a favorite record, and a gathering that doesn’t need to be a grand occasion.
And because this is Lady J, there are stones involved. Just not in the recipe.
A little sparkle, on the side
Not every rocks glass needs a cocktail. Arrange a few favorite crystals in a spare, empty, dry glass and let their facets catch the holiday light. It’s a simple, unexpected decoration for a mantel or side table, bringing a little of the mineral world into your seasonal setting.
The pleasure is in the details: an angular crystal against the curve of a glass, a flash of color, reflections that shift as you move. It’s the same fascination that brings me back to gemstones at the workbench.
Keep this arrangement purely decorative, away from the drinks station and anything you’re serving, and out of reach of young children and pets. Do not add natural crystals to cocktails or use them as ice or garnishes.
For the drinks themselves: fresh ice, ginger or citrus, and a favorite ring on the hand holding the glass.
Winter Smoke & Ginger
A Lady J Holiday Ritual
Smoky, floral, tart, and warming, this is a cocktail made for slow sipping.
Ingredients
- 2 oz mezcal
- 2 oz St-Germain elderflower liqueur
- A few dashes of dry vermouth
- ¾ oz fresh lime juice
- A few dashes of ginger bitters
- Ice, for shaking and serving
- A piece of crystallized ginger or a dehydrated citrus wheel, to garnish
Instructions
- Add the mezcal, St-Germain, ginger bitters, dry vermouth, and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds.
- Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Top with crystallized ginger or a dehydrated citrus wheel, and enjoy.
Then find somewhere comfortable. There’s no need to rush the good part.
And what about the cocktail ring?
For me, a cocktail ring is a piece with presence. An expressive stone. A color you keep looking at. Something that makes even the simple gesture of lifting a glass feel a little more dressed up.
Choose by mood rather than rules. A deep blue for a quiet evening. A vivid green against your favorite dark sweater. Or the ring you’ve been saving for an occasion that never seems quite special enough.
Wear that one.
That’s the spirit behind Lady J Loves Holiday Moods: jewelry for the way you feel, the moments you’re marking, and the person you’re becoming. A gift can hold that meaning. So can something you choose for yourself.
Here’s to a little ritual, a little color, and making room for delight.
Cheers,
Jessica / Lady J
